So I finally pulled the trigger and got the R5 Mark II after shooting with the original R5 for years and man the autofocus is a different beast entirely. Im heading out to Yellowstone in about three weeks for the fall season and I really want to make the most of that new stacked sensor but Im feeling stuck on the glass situation.
Ive been using my old EF 500mm f/4L IS II with the control ring adapter and it’s okay I guess but I feel like I might be missing out on some of the tracking consistency or maybe the burst rate is just too much for the older motor tech to handle smoothly? I dont know it just feels slightly off compared to how snappy the camera is. I have about 6500 bucks saved up for a new lens specifically for this body and I cant decide if I should go for the RF 200-800 for the sheer reach or if I should look at the RF 100-500 plus a 1.4x extender... but then I start losing too much light in the early mornings which is when the wolves are usually out anyway.
Has anyone else noticed a significant jump in hit rates switching from adapted EF to native RF glass on this specific sensor? I want to make sure whatever I bring to Wyoming can actually keep up with the 30fps and the blackout-free EVF without stuttering. Should I just stick with what I have or is there a holy grail lens for this body that I havent considered yet?
In my experience, those new sensors really shine when you use native Canon glass. I have tried many adapted setups over the years and they just dont have that same response time.
- Higher communication speed
- Better stabilization sync
- Tracking stays glued Just get any native telephoto from the RF lineup and youll see the difference. It is definitely worth the switch for that body.
