So I finally pulled the trigger on the R7 but now I am losing my mind over the lens situation. I mainly do birding and I am trying to figure out if I should just bite the bullet and get the RF 100-500mm or go for that monster 200-800mm everyone is talking about. My logic was that the 100-500 is way more portable and I read online it is the gold standard for the R series but then I see the price tag and I want to cry. Plus some people say it doesnt reach far enough for small songbirds even with the crop factor. So then I look at the 200-800 and it seems like a dream for reach but that f/9 aperture at 800mm is scaring me... I live in Oregon and its basically gray and dark for 9 months of the year so I feel like I am gonna be shooting at like ISO 12800 just to get a decent shutter speed. I also looked at the older EF 100-400 II with an adapter because people say its a bargain now but is it gonna be weirdly front heavy on the R7? My budget is roughly $2000-2500 and I have a trip to the coast in three weeks so I need to decide fast. Its just so much money and I dont want to make the wrong call and be stuck with a lens that is too dark or too short. What are you guys actually using on this body?
- Unfortunately, that Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM is kinda disappointing for our gray PNW weather.
- f/9 is not as good as expected.
- Grab the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM.
