I just picked up a used R6 and I'm struggling with which lens to keep on it for a trip to Tokyo next month. I did some reading and everyone says the RF 24-105mm f/4L is the gold standard but then I saw some people swear by the cheaper non-L version cause it's so much lighter for hiking and walking around all day. I'm also kinda looking at the 24-240mm since it has that extra reach but I worry the image quality might take a hit compared to the L series glass. My budget is pretty firm at $1200 so I cant really go crazy. Is the extra cost for the f/4 constant aperture actually worth it for everyday shots or is the versatility of the zoom range more important?

Honestly, I chose the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM to save money and it is amazing! The lightweight build provides reliable stability and its technical performance is fantastic for budget-conscious travelers!

Are you gonna be doing most of your shooting at night? Tokyo is bright but the lights are tricky. I once brought a basic lens on a rainy trip and the lack of sealing almost killed my gear... I'd suggest the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM because:

@Reply #3 - good point! Reliability is a huge deal when you're out in the elements. Saw this earlier and had to jump in because honestly, I'm having the exact same struggle right now and it's getting pretty annoying. I've been trying to decide between the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM for my own trip for over a month and I still havent made up my mind. I keep worrying about the weight versus the image quality and I'm just totally stuck. It feels like every time I read a new thread I get even more confused and I still have no idea which way to go...

I've spent a lot of time wandering through cities like Tokyo and honestly, I've found that just sticking with a solid Canon L-series zoom is the way to go. Last time I went on a big trip, I was super satisfied with how my red-ring lens handled everything from crowded streets to dimly lit shrines. It works well because you don't have to worry about the weather or the image quality dropping off when you zoom in. If you want my advice, just find a used professional zoom from Canon that fits your budget. You really cant go wrong with their higher-end glass, and it'll save you money in the long run because you wont feel the need to upgrade six months from now. No complaints here since I made the switch to their better optics. It just makes the whole experience of shooting way more enjoyable when you trust your gear.
