Im really stressing over which lens to get for my new R50 before my Chicago trip next Friday. My budget is strictly under $300. I was thinking the RF 50mm f/1.8 because its a steal but my logic was that on an APS-C it might be way too tight for street shots? Like 80mm equivalent sounds way too zoomed in for walking around. So then I started looking at the RF 28mm f/2.8 pancake. Its way more portable but it stretches my budget and Im scared f/2.8 isnt fast enough for nice dog portraits. I keep going back and forth and I just dont want to make a mistake...

Honestly you might want to consider just grabbing the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM first because its such a total steal. I know that 80mm equivalent sounds scary for walking around a city but it really forces you to look for cool details instead of just snapping everything. Just a few things to be careful with before you pull the trigger:

  • The 50mm is killer for dogs but youll be backing up a lot for street scenes. Dont trip over a curb in Chicago trying to fit a building in the frame!
  • That Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM is nice and tiny but id suggest checking if f/2.8 is enough blur for you. On a crop sensor like your R50 it wont look nearly as creamy as the 50mm.
  • Make sure to bring your kit lens anyway for those wide skyline shots. If it were me id save the money and get the 50mm. Its the best way to get that professional look without breaking the bank.
