So I finally bit the bullet and grabbed the R5 Mark II last week and man this thing is fast but now I'm broke lol. I need a proper wildlife lens before my trip to the Everglades in November because my old 70-200 just isnt gonna cut it for birds and gators from a distance. I am totally torn between the RF 100-500mm and that new RF 200-800mm.

The 100-500 is obviously better glass and way easier to carry around all day which matters since we will be hiking a lot but that extra reach on the 200-800 is so tempting for small shorebirds even if the aperture is kinda slow at the long end. I keep looking at the 200-800 and thinking about how much cropping I can avoid but then I worry the autofocus wont be as snappy on the newer body compared to the L series glass. My budget is capped at about 2800 now since the body was so pricey and the wife is already looking at me funny for spending this much on a hobby. Is the 100-500 worth the extra cash even though it has less reach for a high megapixel body like this or should I just go for the big zoom and call it a day?...

Man, congrats on the R5II! I had the exact same dilemma before my last trip and went with the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM. It's amazing because it actually fits in a normal backpack! Honestly, that sensor lets you crop so much that 500mm is plenty. Quick tip: set a custom button to the 1.6x crop mode. It makes tracking tiny birds way easier!
