Where can I find the actual good discounts on Sony bodies right now? I've been a pro shooter for over a decade mostly on Canon glass but I'm finally switching to Sony for a big lifestyle shoot I have coming up in Denver in three weeks. I'm looking at the A7IV but even the grey market stuff seems pricey this week which is weird because usually there's some kind of bundle deal or trade-in bonus. I have about $2500 set aside for the body alone. I'm dying to get that E-mount autofocus but every deal I find on B&H or Amazon is just the standard MSRP. Did I miss a major rebate cycle or something??

Honestly you just missed the spring rebate cycle by a few weeks. Sony is super rigid with their pricing between major holidays. Since you have $2500 for the body, these are the best paths right now based on what I usually do:

  • Sony Alpha a7 IV 33MP Mirrorless Body
  • It is the standard choice for a reason. AF is incredible. Finding it under $2498 is tough right now, but check Focus Camera for bundle deals that include free cards or bags.
  • Sony Alpha a7R IV 61MP Mirrorless Body
  • If you need resolution for the Denver shoot, look for a used copy. They go for around $2000 to $2200. AF is solid but a bit more sluggish than the a7IV.
  • Sony Alpha a7 III 24MP Mirrorless Body
  • If you want to save a grand for lenses. AF is still better than older Canon stuff, but the menu is a total nightmare compared to the newer bodies. I usually buy open-box from Adorama or B&H to save a few hundred bucks without losing the US warranty. Grey market is too risky for pro work imo.
