Hey everyone! I shoot with a Fujifilm X-H1 and I’ve been asked to cover a couple of weddings this year (small-to-medium sized, mostly indoor ceremonies + evening receptions). I’m comfortable with the body, but I’m stuck on what the “best” main lens setup is for weddings on the X-H1.
Right now I have the 35mm f/2 and the 18-55 kit zoom. They’re fine in good light, but once the reception starts I’m fighting higher ISO and slower shutter speeds. I’m trying to decide if I should go with a fast standard zoom (like the 16-55 f/2.8) for flexibility, or build around faster primes (like the 23/1.4 + 56/1.2) for low light and subject separation.
A couple constraints: I’d like something that focuses reliably for moving moments (first dance, walking down the aisle), and I don’t want a lens that’s painfully slow/heavy to handle for a full day. Budget is around $1,000–$1,500 if it really makes sense.
If you were shooting weddings on the X-H1, what lens (or two-lens combo) would you pick as your core setup, and why?

Oh man, been there on the X‑H1… quick question tho: are you using on-camera flash at receptions, and do you need WR? If flash=no, I’d lean primes (Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR + Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR) for safer shutter speeds; if flash=yes, Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR is the reliable “don’t miss moments” pick.
Seconding the primes idea — i was way happier once i stopped trying to force the kit zoom at receptions lol.
- Core: Fujifilm XF 23mm f/1.4 R LM WR + Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R WR (or the older 56/1.2) — faster shutter, cleaner ISO, and AF is actually reliable on the X-H1.
- Safety tip: keep the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS in the bag for “gotta get it now” group stuff.
Also, LM/WR versions matter for moving moments… the old non-LM stuff can hunt.
Have you considered just renting for the first one? Its a total lifesaver and basically the best way to do your own 'field test' without dropping $1500 upfront. Honestly, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is a pretty solid alternative to the expensive Fuji 16-55. It has built-in stabilization that works with the X-H1 IBIS and gives you way more reach for those candid shots. Tbh, if youre worried about weight, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is tiny and super sharp, might leave you enough budget to grab a fast prime too. Pretty sure that combo would cover almost everything. Just a thought if you dont wanna go full 'pro-gear' prices right away but still need that f/2.8 constant aperture.
> Theyre fine in good light, but once the reception starts Im fighting higher ISO and slower shutter speeds. ngl, i spent years with the x-h1 as my main wedding body. Like someone mentioned, that high iso struggle is very real. i remember one reception in a literal cellar where my kit zoom just couldnt keep up. eventually i grabbed the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f2.8 R LM WR and it became my workhorse. the thing is heavy—total brick—but on the x-h1 body it balances perfectly, and the ibis makes up for the lack of ois in the glass. if you want the best results, i would go for that zoom plus a fast prime. the Fujifilm XF 56mm f1.2 R WR is probably the best bet for your budget if you find it used. f/1.2 gives you way more breathing room than f/2.8 when things get dark. basically, the zoom gets you through the must-have moments with flexibility, and the prime saves your skin when the lights go down and you need that subject separation. its a solid combo that i used for dozens of gigs before moving to the newer bodies. the af on the linear motor lenses is also much more reliable for the aisle walk than the older 35mm you have.
I love my X-H1 so much! It really is an amazing beast for weddings especially with that IBIS. I remember my first time trying to shoot a DIY photo booth at my cousins wedding last summer. It was such a blast but honestly a total disaster because:
- the printer jammed every five minutes
- we ran out of props (who steals a fake plastic mustache??)
- the lighting was basically just a single flickering bulb I spent most of the night fixing a jammed paper tray with a butter knife instead of actually taking photos lol. It was a total mess but we ended up just doing a massive road trip to the coast the next day to decompress. We found this tiny taco truck in the middle of nowhere that had the best spicy shrimp I have ever tasted in my life! Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
For your situation, I’d probably build around faster primes, i think? On my X‑H1 I found a bright “normal” prime + a short tele prime makes indoor weddings way less stressful (ISO drops, shutter speeds go up, plus nicer separation). A fast standard zoom is super convenient, but tbh it still feels kinda slow once the lights go down. Maybe keep ur kit zoom for daytime/party candids and lean on the primes for aisle + first dance. gl!!
