What is the best all-around zoom lens for Fujifilm X-T5?

So I finally saved up and bought the X-T5 but I feel like an idiot because I didnt know lenses were sold separately. I have a trip to Japan coming up in like three weeks and I really need just one lens that can do everything because I dont want to carry a heavy bag or keep switching parts while I'm walking around Kyoto.

My budget is probably around $800 to $1000 max. I keep seeing things like 18-55 or 16-80 and it makes no sense to me... is there one 'best' zoom that just stays on the camera all the time for a beginner? I just want clear photos without it being too complicated...

Like someone mentioned, carrying a heavy bag is the worst. I once took a bulky setup to Osaka and regretted it every mile. Honestly, I would suggest the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. Its tiny, super sharp, and way cheaper than other zooms. It might lack some reach, but its perfect for travel. Just make sure you're okay with no aperture ring tho.

I'd be careful choosing the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS as your only lens. I remember missing so many shots in Osaka because it just couldnt zoom enough. The Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR is much safer for a trip like Japan, even if it's a bit bigger. You really dont want to be swapping lenses while walking through crowded shrines.

Building on the earlier suggestion, the focal range is definitely the most important thing for a trip like this. Walking around Kyoto, you're gonna want something that handles wide street scenes and tight temple details without you having to mess with your bag or swap parts constantly. I'd look at these options because they fit your $1000 budget and give you more technical headroom than the basic kits:

  • Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is basically the gold standard for a one-lens setup. It has a constant f/2.8 aperture, which is huge for night shots or dimly lit shrines. It's stabilized too, which helps keep things clear since you're still learning the ropes.
  • Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is the way to go if you really want to travel light. It's tiny and sharp, tho it doesnt zoom in quite as far as the others.
  • Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is the ultimate do-everything lens for range, but it's not quite as good in low light because the aperture changes as you zoom. The 16-80 is fine, but that f/4 aperture can feel a bit slow when you're shooting indoors or as the sun starts setting. Tbh, the Tamron is probably the best bang for your buck at around $700-800. It's a little bigger than the Sigma, but the image quality is stellar and it'll really let that X-T5 sensor shine.

Just saw this thread and I totally get the stress. Japan is incredible but you really dont want to be worrying about your gear the whole time. In my experience, reliability is king... I have tried so many combos over the years and nothing kills the mood faster than a lens that feels flimsy or cant handle a bit of mist. Tbh, since you're new to this, you should probably just:

  • Search for Fujifilm X-T5 travel lens reviews on YouTube
  • Check out the Fuji subreddit for Japan trip reports
  • Look at the sample galleries on some of the big review sites I remember seeing a really good breakdown video recently, just search for something like best fuji travel zoom and it should be right there. Honestly watching a few minutes of that will be way more helpful than us arguing about apertures here. Just make sure whatever you pick feels solid in your hands... nothing worse than gear failing when you're halfway across the world.
