What are the top wide-angle lenses for Leica SL cameras?

So Ive been shooting with the SL2 for a few years now and mostly I just stick to the 35mm and 50mm Summicrons because the rendering is just incredible. But I have this trip to the Dolomites coming up in three weeks and I realized my wide angle game is basically non-existent right now. My logic was originally just to grab the 16-35mm Vario-Elmar-SL because it seems like the obvious choice for versatility when hiking but then I started looking at the weight and man that thing is a total tank. Im gonna be doing some 10-mile days at high altitude and Im honestly worried about my back.

I started looking at alternatives and now I feel like Im going in circles. I thought about the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 DG DN Art since it is L-mount and way cheaper but does it actually hold up on the 47MP sensor? Ive heard some guys say the corners get a bit mushy compared to the native Leica glass. And then there is the whole M-mount rabbit hole. I already have the M-to-L adapter so I was looking at the 21mm f3.4 Super-Elmar-M which is tiny and light but then I remember hearing about sensor stack issues. Does the SL sensor cause a lot of smearing on the edges with those M wides? I really dont want to spend 4k on a lens just to have the edges look like a blurry mess.

My logic is currently split between these three paths:

  • Native 16-35mm zoom for the convenience despite the weight
  • Adapting M-mount glass like the 21mm or 24mm Elmarits to keep it light
  • Going third party with Sigma or maybe the Panasonic 16-35mm Pro

Then there is the 21mm APO-Summicron-SL which looks perfect on paper but the price is just eye-watering. Is the APO correction actually that noticeable at 21mm for landscape shots or is it overkill? My budget is capped at around $3500 so I might be able to find a used one if I get lucky but I also need to think about filters. I keep going back and forth on whether I need the flexibility of a zoom for mountain terrain where you cant always move your feet to frame the shot or if I should stick to the prime philosophy for that extra bit of micro-contrast. What are you guys actually using when you need to go wider than 28mm on the SL system? Is there a hidden gem I am missing or should I just suck it up and carry the heavy zoom...

Honestly, the Panasonic Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f/4 is the safest middle ground here. Its way lighter than the Leica zoom and more reliable for landscapes than adapting M glass, where edge smearing is a real risk. It works great on the SL2, handles weather well, and fits your budget. Basically its the most sensible choice for high altitude hiking.
