What is the best all-around lens for Canon EOS R5 travel?

So I've been an EOS R5 user for a few years now and usually I just lug around the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 but I just did a weekend hike in the Smokies and my neck is still feeling it. I have a trip to Switzerland coming up in three weeks and I'm starting to realize my usual kit is just way too bulky for long days on the trail.

I'm torn between the 24-105 f/4 and maybe something more versatile but I don't want to waste that high res sensor on glass that isn't sharp. Budget is around 2k. Should I just stick with the f/4 or is there a better one lens solution for those mountain landscapes and street shots...

Unfortunately, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM was disappointing for edge sharpness on my R5.

  • stop down f/8
  • check your corners Youll definitely love the lighter pack tho!

I spent a week in Switzerland last year and was so happy I switched things up. I ended up grabbing the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM and it was perfect for those massive mountain vistas.

  • Ultra-wide captures the scale better than 24mm.
  • Its super light for those long vertical hikes.
  • Costs about 1300 bucks.
  • Use a Peak Design Capture Camera Clip to get the weight off your neck and onto your backpack strap.

TL;DR: Stick to L glass to keep that 45MP sensor happy. Just saw this. You might want to consider that cheaper non-L glass often struggles to resolve enough detail for the R5. Be careful with superzooms tho, I would suggest staying with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM for those Swiss peaks. It is a solid middle ground for quality. Just make sure to use a Peak Design Slide Camera Strap so your neck doesnt give out again. Feel free to ask if you need help with landscape settings!

Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
