What is the best all-around zoom lens for Canon EOS R5?

I've been shooting with the 5D Mark IV for what feels like forever and I finally bit the bullet and grabbed an R5 last week for my wedding business here in Seattle. honestly the autofocus is insane but I'm legit panicking about the lenses because my old EF glass with the adapter feels so front-heavy and clunky now. i need one lens that can basically live on the camera for 80% of a shoot because swapping during a ceremony is a nightmare. I was looking at the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 but then someone told me the 24-105mm is better for the IBIS or something? the R5 sensor is so high res that I'm worried about seeing every little bit of softness at the edges if I dont get the absolute top tier stuff.

  • budget is around 2500 max
  • needs to handle low light (receptions are dark!)
  • weather sealing is a must because... well, Seattle rains
  • decent weight balance since I'm handheld all day

I have a huge wedding coming up in three weeks and I really dont want to be fumbling with an adapter or missing focus because of old motors. Is the 28-70 f2 actually worth the weight or am I gonna destroy my wrist by the end of a 10 hour day? I'm just so stressed about making the wrong call before this big gig...

I've shot dozens of weddings with the R5 and honestly, skip the f/2 beast. My wrist still hurts from trying that at a marathon shoot last summer in the rain.

  • Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is the clear winner. The edge-to-edge sharpness handles that 45MP sensor perfectly.
  • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is just too slow for dim receptions, even with great IBIS. Weight balance is spot on for handheld work. The 24-70 is basically glued to my camera now.
