Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens Review (DCW)

Matthew Richards has just posted a full review of the newly released Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens (Amazon/ B&H/ Adorama) at the Digitalcameraworld.com. Highly Recommended!

You might think that the F2.8 through lens is big and heavy and doesn’t fit mirrorless, but this isn’t the case, and it’s surprisingly small and lightweight for an F2.8 through zoom.

The AF uses a linear stepping motor that focuses quickly and follows fast-moving subjects. Smooth focusing is possible even when shooting movies.

The only drawback is that it doesn’t have image stabilization, and many APS-C cameras that use this lens don’t have in-body image stabilization.

The lens barrel is of very good quality at TSC. It is sealed and is dust-proof and drip-proof.
The movement of the zoom ring and focus ring is smooth and accurate. There is no AF / MF selector switch or customizable function buttons.

Here is the verdict, “Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN Contemporary is a remarkably compact yet well-built, weather-resistant lens. It has super-fast and virtually silent autofocus, and delivers impressive image quality. At just a quarter of the weight and price of many f/2.8 standard zooms, it’s a great buy. All in all, this Sigma is a little lens that really does punch well above its weight.
